I know that the major national advertising agencies and media buyers would be interested in buying advertising space (for clients) in the newspaper where I work. I’m new to the company, but I know that my newspaper has, in fact, national advertising agencies / media buyers much of its advertising revenues in the past (and still does not leave). Is it acceptable for me, as an ad representative contact directly with advertising agencies to try to convince their customers to spend more ad dollars with my particular media?

Most newspaper, radio and tv companies have a national account manager that handles that. You would need to check with your manager first and see if they’ll allow it. Most of the time they will if the buyer doesn’t have an account with you.
You should talk with your manager, every company is set up differently and a lot of the times, companies have national account reps that have the right contacts and skills to go after different agencies. If you are allowed I suggest networking and trying to get a face to face meeting to give them information to get back to you.
